Shotwell Takes Third, Kiesler Eighth at Click Decathlon

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and fifth-year senior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) of the University of Michigan track and field team placed third and eighth, respectively, at the University of Arizona Jim Click Decathlon Friday (March 23) at the Drachman Track and Field Stadium.
Shotwell's point total of 6,353 was 547 points shy of grabbing an NCAA provisional mark. His best performances came in the in the 110-meter hurdles and the long jump. In the 110-meter hurdles, Shotwell clocked 14.98 for the second-fastest mark. The effort earned him 852 points. In the long jump, he landed the third-longest mark with a jump of 21-1 1/4, earning 682 points toward his total.
Shotwell also had strong showings in the 100-meter dash and 400-meter run, placing fourth in both. In the 100-meter dash, his time of 11.00 was good enough for 861 points, while his time of 50.06 in the 400-meter dash was worth 812 points.
Kiesler finished the meet with a total of 5,476 points. His best individual event placing came in the javelin throw, recording the fifth-highest mark, 147-9 1/2, to earn 516 points. Kiesler also took sixth in both the shot put (39-0 1/4, 600 points) and the discus throw (117-5 1/2, 580 points).
Other Wolverines will be competing Saturday (March 24) at the USC Trojan Invite in Los Angeles, Calif. The meet will be held at Loker Track and Field Stadium.
