44 Wolverines Make Winter Academic All-Big Ten Team

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Forty-four University of Michigan student-athletes are among the Academic All-Big Ten Conference winter honorees for 2006-07. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average of 3.0 or better.

Among the Wolverines to earn Academic All-Big Ten distinction were seniors Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), who combined for eight All-America honors at the 2007 NCAA Championships. A sports management major, Brady was the 2006 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year and has accumulated nine Big Ten titles and seven All-America honors in her U-M career. The 2007 Swimmer of the Big Ten Championship, Smith won four events at the conference meet, including her fourth straight title in the 200-yard freestyle. A 10-time NCAA All-American, Smith is an elementary education major.

Coming off a runner-up finish at the NCAA Wrestling Championships at 149 pounds, senior/junior team captain Josh Churella (Northville, Mich./Novi) earned his second Academic All-Big Ten honor. Churella is a three-time All-American majoring in general studies. He was joined on the academic team by fellow wrestling All-Americans Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North) and Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry). A neuroscience major, Tannenbaum was a 2006 Academic All-America second team selection and earned All-America honors at 165 pounds in 2007. A junior/sophomore history major, Luke captured the 2007 Big Ten title at 174 pounds and went on to earn All-America honors.
