EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A portion of the University of Michigan men's track and field team competed at the Spartan Invitational Saturday (April 14) at Ralph Young Track in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines had several strong performances, including two victories and four new personal records. U-M also sent members of the team to compete in the Sea Ray Relays (April 11-14) in Knoxville, Tenn.
Sophomore Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) claimed a win in the 800-meter run. Switzer clocked a new personal record of 1:52.06, bypassing his old mark (1:52.61) by more than a half-second. Sophomore Mike Luginbill (Troy, Mich./Troy) and sophomore/freshman Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York) were just over three seconds behind, placing 13th (1:55.63) and 14th (1:55.81), respectively.
In his first attempt at the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the collegiate level, sophomore/freshman Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) was victorious. Fellows clocked a time of 9:18.10; just 11.10 seconds shy of the NCAA regional qualifying mark. Right on his heels was fifth-year senior Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser), who took second place (9:21.10). The race was the first time that Bauer has competed since last track season.
Sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) had a strong day, taking second place in the 100-meter dash and fourth place in the long jump. His time of 10.77 was just .04 seconds shy of unattached runner Jeremy Orr for first place in the 100-meter dash. Harris' mark in the long jump was 21-10 1/4.
Just two weeks after setting a new personal best, sophomore/freshman John Kipf (Monroe, Mich./St. Mary's Catholic Central) had another strong performance in the high jump. Kipf cleared a mark of 6-6 3/4 to take second place -- just two inches short of first place.
Freshman Grant Till (Wayne N.J./Wayne Hills) joined the group of Wolverines who set new career bests. Till took third place in the javelin throw when he recorded a mark of 174-6. Fifth-year senior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) took fourth in the event (166).
The Wolverines were well-represented in the 400-meter hurdles. Freshman Matt Wheeler (Atherton, Calif./Menlo-Atherton) and sophomore Stevann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event. Wheeler crossed the line in 56.09, with Waithe less than a second behind at 56.73.
Fifth-year senior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Portage Northern) did well in the throwing events. Sarantos took second place in the shot put (52-0 1/2), third in the discus throw (151-2) and sixth in the hammer throw (164-9).
