IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned its fifth consecutive win and completed a two-game series sweep against Iowa with a 2-0 shutout on Saturday (April 14) at Bob Pearl Softball Field. After cold, wintry weather eliminated a pair of Big Ten Conference series the previous weekend, the sweep improved the Wolverines' conference mark to 3-1.
The shutout was Michigan's 12th of the season and the third of the year for freshman Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS), who earned the decision for the second time in the series to improve to 15-3 on the season. Nemitz stifled the Hawkeye offense, striking out seven batters while allowing just three hits. Iowa was unable to advance a runner past second base as Nemitz extended her shutout streak to 13.1 consecutive innings.
Junior Samantha Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Wolverines' offensive production, while her, sister, freshman Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS), drove in the game-winning run in the opening frame with an RBI single to leftfield.
Angela Findlay's hit was Michigan's third of the inning and succeeded back-to-back one-out singles from senior Rebekah Milian (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and Findlay's sister, Samantha, who drilled deep shots to center and right center, respectively. Combined, the Findlay sisters boast five game-winning hits during the Wolverines' last 16 games.
Michigan tallied four of its seven total hits in the opening two frames and added two more in the fourth, which led to its second run of the contest. Following a quick out in the leadoff spot, sophomore Allison Kidman (Tarpon Springs, Fla./Countryside HS) and Teddi Ewing (Olathe, Kan./East HS) sent back-to-back singles up the middle to give U-M runners in scoring position. Iowa collected its second out, tagging Kidman at third base on a fielder's choice but, in the subsequent at-bat, committed a costly error from the catcher's spot to allow Ewing to score unearned from second base.
Nemitz allowed one hit and forced three groundouts, a couple floaters to the outfield and four strikeouts over the last three innings to ice the victory for the Maize and Blue.
The Wolverines will travel to Champaign, Ill., to face Illinois tomorrow (Sunday, April 15) in a noon CDT doubleheader at Eichelberger Field.
