ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan football program announced today (Saturday, April 14) the recipients of three awards presented following spring drills. Senior quarterback Chad Henne (Wyomissing, Pa./Wilson HS), senior/junior defensive tackle Will Johnson (Oakland, Mich./Lake Orion HS) and sophomore wide receiver Greg Mathews (Orlando, Fla./Edgewater HS) have received recognition for their performance during the 15-practice spring drills.
Henne, one of the nation's top returning signal callers, has been named the recipient of the Meyer Morton Award. This award was established by the M Club of Chicago in 1925 and is annually given to the football player who shows the greatest development and promise as a result of spring practice. Morton, a 1912 Michigan graduate, was a lawyer in Chicago from 1915-48 and served as a Big Ten football official for 23 years. A third-team All-American in 2006, Henne is quickly approaching Michigan's career passing records. He has completed 666-of-1109 passes (60.1 pct.) for 7,777 yards with 70 touchdowns. He needs three passing scores to set U-M's career mark.
The Frederick Matthaei Award was presented to Johnson. The recognition is bestowed upon a junior-to-be-gridder who has displayed leadership, drive and achievement on the athletic field and in the classroom. The award was established in 1968 by the namesake, Frederick C. Matthaei. Johnson collected seven tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack in 13 games as a backup defensive tackle last season.
Mathews claimed the John F. Maulbetsch Award as the freshman football candidate after spring practice on the basis of desire, character, capacity for leadership and future success both on and off the gridiron. The award was established by Frederick C. Matthaei in 1954 to honor the late John F. Maulbetsch, an All-American halfback for the Wolverines in 1914. Mathews played in all 13 games and started one contest as a true freshman last season, collecting seven receptions for 68 yards with a 22-yard long against Northwestern.
