Seniors Lead Men's Track at Hillsdale Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- A portion of the University of Michigan men's track and field team competed at the Hillsdale "Gina" Relays Thursday through Saturday (April 26-28) at the Hillsdale College Track. The Wolverines also sent several members of the team to compete in the 113th Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday (April 26-28) at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
Fifth-year senior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) began the competition for the Wolverines in the decathlon. Kiesler compiled a career-high 5,864 points to place fourth overall in the event. His efforts were highlighted by third-place finishes in both the long jump (21-5 1/4) and the shot put (39-2 1/2).
In the open 5,000-meter run, junior/sophomore Victor Gras (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) took seventh place with a time of 14:19.13. Gras' mark was nearly seven seconds shy of the NCAA regional qualifying mark of 14:12.00.
Fifth-year senior Paul Sarantos (Portage, Mich./Northern) and sophomore/freshman Vince Belitsos (Leonard, Mich./Oxford) each set new career-high marks in the hammer throw. Sarantos took 17th (169-7) and Belitsos finished right behind in 18th (167-7). Belitsos also set a new career-high in the discus throw with a mark of 148-9 -- good enough for 13th.
Fifth-year senior Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) continued to improve in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, shaving time off of his season-best for the third consecutive week. Bauer clocked 9:19.41 to take 12th place in the event.
Next week, the Wolverines will host the annual Len Paddock Invitational -- their lone outdoor meet of the season -- on May 4-5 at Ferry Field in Ann Arbor, Mich. The meet -- the final tuneup before the postseason -- is slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
