ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Headlined by performances from the bottom half of its lineup, the University of Michigan softball team claimed a 3-0 shutout victory over cross-town rival Eastern Michigan Tuesday evening (May 1) in front of 516 fans at Alumni Field.
Junior rightfielder Michelle Weatherdon (Marquette, Mich./Marquette HS) led the Wolverine offensive effort with a career-best performance at the plate, going 2-for-2 and tallying the game-winning RBI single with two outs in the second frame. Freshman third baseman Maggie Viefhaus (Eureka, Mo./Eureka HS) was also perfect, going 1-for-1 with a walk, a pair of runs scored and an RBI triple -- the first of her career.
Freshman pitcher Nikki Nemitz (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Regina HS) earned her fifth complete-game shutout of the season, striking out a career-high 10 batters and allowing three hits to claim her 20th win. Eastern Michigan's hits were contained to two innings, and no Eagle runner advanced beyond second base during the game.
Weatherdon first came to plate with two outs in the second inning and Viefhaus on second base after a leadoff walk and a sacrifice hit from sophomore shortstop Teddi Ewing (Olathe, Kan./East HS). Weatherdon -- who matched her career-high at-bat total with today's pair -- lobbed a high, well-placed pop up to shallow rightfield to bring in Viefhaus for the only run her team would need.
The Wolverines didn't stop there, however, adding two more tallies in the bottom of the sixth frame to ice the non-conference victory. Freshman Angela Findlay (Lockport, Ill./East HS) opened the inning with a leadoff single through the right side and -- after EMU earned a quick first out -- Viefhaus ripped a hard line drive to the fence in right center and legged out the triple as Findlay crossed home plate to score. Viefhaus came home herself in the next at-bat when freshman Roya St. Clair (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) hit a sacrifice chopper to shortstop.
With the three-run advantage providing cushion entering the final frame, Nemitz faced the minimum three batters in the top of the seventh, plunking the leadoff batter before forcing a double play and fanning the final out.
U-M will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series against Michigan State. On Saturday (May 5), the Wolverines will travel to Old College Field in East Lansing, Mich., for a 1 p.m. slate before returning to Alumni Field to host a 1 p.m. meeting on Sunday (May 6).
