STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Sophomore Adam Harris (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) clocked a new personal record and an NCAA regional qualifying time in the 200-meter dash prelims to lead the University of Michigan men's track and field team Saturday (May 12) on the second day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Nittany Lion Track. After day two, the Wolverines sit in ninth place with five points. Wisconsin leads in the team standings with 65 points heading into the final day Sunday (May 13).
Harris clocked 21.18 in the 200-meter dash prelims to win the third and final heat of the event and qualify for tomorrow's final. His time was the third fastest in the field and the second regional mark of his career. Harris also qualified for the 100-meter dash final after clocking the second fastest time (10.69) overall in prelims.
Sophomore/freshman Brandon Fellows (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) scored a point for the Wolverines in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Fellows -- competing in the event for the second time in his career -- clocked 9:12.23 to finish eighth in the event. His mark was about five seconds short of an NCAA regional qualifying time (9:07.00). Fifth-year senior Andrew Bauer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser) placed 16th with a time of 9:32.81.
In the decathlon, freshman Frank Shotwell (Medina, Ohio/Medina) scored a total of 6,437 points to place 10th overall. Shotwell was just 154 points shy of finishing eighth -- the last scoring position. Fifth-year senior Adam Kiesler (Rochester, Ill./Rochester) took 13th with a total of 5,282 points.
In addition to Harris, the Maize and Blue boasted several other strong performances in the preliminary round of competition on the track. The Wolverines will send eight individual representatives and a relay to seven event finals Sunday (May 13).
The Wolverines had three athletes qualify for the 1,500-meter final. Sophomore Justin Switzer (Waterford, Mich./Kettering) won the third heat of the event with a time of 3:55.76, earning an automatic bid into the final round. Junior Mike Woods (Ottawa, Ontario/Hillcrest) also received an automatic bid when he placed third in his heat with a time of 3:54.25. Sophomore/freshman Sean McNamara (Elmhurst, Ill./York) ran in the fastest heat and took fourth place with a time of 3:53.17. McNamara's mark was good enough to advance to the final (since he clocked the fourth fastest time overall).
U-M will send multiple athletes to the event final in the 800-meter runl. Fifth-year senior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation) won the first heat of the event with a time of 1:50.51 to earn a spot in tomorrow's final. Less than a second behind Ellerton was senior John D'Arcy (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont), who placed second in the heat with a time of 1:51.13. D'Arcy's time was the sixth fastest mark in the field, earning him a spot in the final.
The other two Wolverines that will compete in their respective event finals are senior Jeff Porter (Somerset, N.J./Franklin) in the 110-meter hurdles and junior Andrew Wechter (Shelby, Ohio/Shelby) in the 400-meter dash. Porter won his heat and clocked 14.00 to earn an automatic berth, while Wechter placed third in his heat with a time of 47.75. Wechter's time was sixth-fastest overall to earn him a spot in the event final.
The Michigan 4x100-meter relay squad of junior Shakir Edwards (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King), Porter, sophomore Andre Barnes (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and Harris qualified for the event final with the sixth fastest time of 41.12.
The Wolverines suffered a setback in the 400-meter hurdles prelims when junior/sophomore Dan Harmsen (Rockford, Mich./Rockford), who was expected to qualify for Sunday's event final, pulled up during the race with a hamstring injury. Harmsen entered the Big Ten meet with the sixth fastest time in the conference.
The Wolverines will return to the track Sunday (May 13) for the third and final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in State College, Pa. Men's competition is slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. with the shot put.
