Whitehead Named District Field Athlete of the Year

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Michael Whitehead (East Norristown, Pa./Norristown Area) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team has been named the NCAA Division I Great Lakes District Field Athlete of the Year for outdoor track and field by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Great Lakes District is one of nine total districts in Division I.
Whitehead was named District Field Athlete of the Year after winning the Big Ten title in the triple jump with a mark of 52-11 1/2. After winning the conference crown, he went on to place second in the event at the Mideast Regional (51-10 1/2). Other season highlights include winning the triple jump at the Texas Relays and landing a season best of 53-4 1/2 at the Len Paddock Invitational. Whitehead's season-high is the third longest mark in the nation heading into the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
Whitehead and four other Wolverines will compete in the NCAA Outdoor Championships Wednesday through Saturday (June 6-9) in Sacramento, Calif. The event will be held at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium.
