September, 2, 2007 --Brett Sickler won her second straight gold medal with the U.S. women's eight at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Championships. The American boat led the race from start to finish to clock in at 6:17.20. The triumph sewed up a 2008 Beijing Olympic bid for the U.S. womens eight.Additionally, Janine Hanson (Canada) and Ellen Tomek (USA) helped their respective countries earn Olympic bids. Hanson and the Canadians placed fifth, while Tomek and the U.S. boat were sixth (6:41.01). Heather Mandoli and Katie Reynolds placed sixth in the Canadian eight, which will need to re-qualify next summer in order to garner an Olympic spot. August 29, 2007 --Brett Sickler's U.S. eight won its repechage race on day four at the 2007 FISA World Championships in Munich, Germany. With the win, the American eight advances to the final on Sunday. August 27, 2007 --U-M alumnae were busy on day two of the 2007 FISA World Championships in Munich, Germany. Three former Wolverines competed in heat two for the women's eight - Brett Sickler for the U.S. and Heather Mandoli and Katie Reynolds for Canada. Sickler and the American eight finishedsecond in its heat behind Australia after leading for most of the race. The Canadian eight finished behind the U.S. in third place.The U.S. and Canadian eights will race next in the repechages on Aug. 29. Two more Wolverines raced in the quadruple sculls event. Rowing for the United States was Ellen Tomek and for Canada was Janine Hanson. Hanson's Canadian crew finished in third, followed by Tomek's boat in fourth. August 11, 2007 --Natalie Eisermann and Grace Luczak collected bronze medals in the U.S.eight at the 2007 FISA World Rowing Junior Championships in Beijing, China on Aug. 11. Fellow incoming freshman Suzanne Maddammatook third in the single sculls B final to earn a ninth-place overall finish. [ USRowing Release ]
August 10, 2007 -- Suzanne Maddamma placed fifth in her single sculls semifinal on Aug. 10 at the 2007 FISA Junior World Championships in Beijing, China. She will race in the B final for places 7-12 on Aug. 11. [USRowing Release]
August 9, 2007 -- Suzanne Maddamma earned second place in her repechage this morning to advance to the semifinals on Aug. 10. Maddamma battled back from fifth place early on to finish in 8:05.30, 4.55 seconds behind the winner. [USRowing Release]
August 8, 2007 -- Freshmen Natalie Eisermann and Grace Luczak of the United States eight won their heat on Aug. 8 at the 2007 FISA Junior World Championships in Beijing, China. With a wire-to-wire victory, the U.S. boat advanced directly to the final on Aug. 11. Freshman Suzanne Maddamma placed third in her heat and will need a top-three finish during the repechage on Aug. 9 in order to reach the semifinals. [USRowing Release]
August 4, 2007 -- Heather Mandoli (2004), Katie Reynolds, and Janine Hanson (2006)were named to Team Canada's 2007 World Championship Team on Aug. 4. Mandoli and Reynolds will be racing in Canada's eight for the second straight world championship. Hanson will be making her debut on the Canadian National Team in the quadruple sculls boat. July 24, 2007 -- Three incoming freshmen were named to the U.S. Junior National Team. Suzanne Maddamma will row in the single sculls event. Natalie Eisermann and Grace Luczak are slated for the eight. All three are headed to Beijing, China, for the 2007 FISA Junior World Championships from Aug. 8-11. July 19, 2007 -- Former teammates Cristin McCarty (2006) and Sarah Trowbridge (2005) went head to head as opponents at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil as McCarty suited up for Canada and Trowbridge pulled for the USA. Each won a gold and a silver medal at the other's expense. On July 18, Trowbridge's American pair edged out MCarty's by a mere 2.53 seconds. The following day, McCarty and the Canadian quad turned the table and captured gold by an even slimmer margin, 0.55 second. [Releases:USRowing|RowingCanada]
July 15, 2007 -- Brett Sickler (2005) and the U.S. eight won the gold medal at the 2007 Rowing World Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. The U.S. battled Germany the entire way down the course before pulling away in the final 500 meters to win the gold medal, clocking a 6:04.36 to Germany's 6:06.55. July 6, 2007 -- Rising junior Julia Nelson was named to Canada's Under-23 National Team. Nelson, who will be in the eight shell, will be making her first appearance in an international event for Team Canada. June 3, 2007 - Heather Mandoli (2004) and Katie Reynolds (2004) helped Canada's eight to a fourth-place finish at the 2007 Rowing World Cup in Linz/Ottensheim, Austria. Germany won in 6:16.81, Great Britain (6:18.07) was second, the Netherlands (6:18.31) a close third, followed by Canada (6:20.15), Australia (6:21.93) and China (6:22.79). [RowingCanadaRelease]
Entering its 12th year, the University of Michigan rowing program has created an environment that fosters the development of elite rowers from all across the United States and Canada. At least one Wolverine has been a member of a senior national team or an under-23 national team in all but one year since the program's first season in 1997.
