OXFORD, Ohio -- The No. 20 University of Michigan volleyball team won its second straight tournament, knocking off Wake Forest 3-0 (30-22, 30-27, 30-22) Saturday afternoon (Sept. 1) in the finale of the Miami Classic at Millett Hall. The win gives Michigan a 6-0 record for the season.
Senior Katie Bruzdzinski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) paced the offense again with 13 kills, adding three aces and seven digs, while junior Beth Karpiak (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) cracked double-digits with 10 kills and added a pair of blocks.
Three Wolverines -- Karpiak, sophomore Veronica Rood (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and senior Lyndsay Miller (Ida, Mich./Ida) -- finished with nine kills apiece, and senior Stesha Selsky (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Marymount) added 20 digs to her resume, which placed her into the Big Ten Conference's all-time top 10 digs list.
Freshman Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) continued her hot start at the service line, recording three aces. She also added 46 assists and set the Wolverines to a .351 clip.
Michigan and Wake Forest scrapped through the early parts of game one until the Wolverines exploded on a 12-5 run to take a commanding 25-18 lead and ice the game. Rood's scintillating six kills and Bruzdzinski's five paced U-M, while Selsky's eight digs kept the Wake Forest hitters flustered. Bruzdzinski also added a pair of aces -- her fifth and sixth aces of the tournament.
The Wolverines kept the pressure on in game two, rolling to a 29-23 lead before a late Demon Deacon rally made the final score look closer than it was (30-27). Karpiak and Miller tallied four kills apiece and Zimmerman nailed two aces, while Selsky added a mortal five digs.
Game three was a Wolverine whitewash, as Michigan built a sizeable lead early and cruised to a 30-22 win. Bruzdzinski added five kills to her total and put down a third ace, while Zimmerman nailed an ace and Selsky added seven digs.
Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for its home opener on Friday (Sept. 7), when the Wolverines host Eastern Michigan at 11 a.m. in the opening match of the Michigan/Pepsi Challenge. U-M will play Xavier later that night at 7:30 p.m. to wrap up the one-day, three-team tournament.
