ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan athletic media relations office was honored with a number of national publication and writing awards for the 2006-07 year, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The Michigan athletic media relations office picked up a pair of publications awards, earning best covers in the nation for the men's golf and women's tennis media guides. Assistant directors for media relations Tom Wywrot (men's golf) and Marc Ressler (women's tennis) assisted Old Hat Creative Design of Norman, Okla., on the covers. Wywrot previously earned a CoSIDA award for best women's golf media guide in the country in 2004-05.
Assistant director for media relations Richard Retyi was honored with five writing awards, including two national honors, in the Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. Retyi's story on volleyball player Erin Penn's summer wedding before her senior season ("A Match Made in Maize and Blue Heaven") earned third place for national athlete profiles, while his first installment of "In Their Shoes," which included volleyball, gymnastics and swimming, was awarded third prize for national general features. Both pieces appeared in M Magazine, the official program of Michigan athletics.

Retyi had a pair of pieces chosen as the best in the district in the event coverage category, with his "At NCAAs With Women's Gymnastics" blog chosen the best in the district and his coverage of the Michigan women's gymnastics meet at Michigan State ("Michigan Sweeps the Podium in Win at Michigan State") was picked the second-best piece in the district.
