ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Head coach Mike McGuire of the University of Michigan women's cross country squad announced Wednesday (Sept. 19) that senior/juniors Nicole Edwards (Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) and Natasha Luppov (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and fifth-year senior Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) have been named captains for the 2007 season.
"Nicole, Natasha and Erin have developed both academically and personally in our program and are most-deserving of the honor of being captain," said McGuire. "They embody the qualities that other teammates can look up too starting with their attitude which fits the leadership role of this team."
Last season, Edwards finished ninth individually at the Big Ten Championships, won the individual NCAA regional championship and placed 12th at the NCAA Championship. She was named NCAA All-American, All-Big Ten second team and All-Regional for her successes in 2006. Edwards has also earned Academic All-Big Ten citation and received the U-M Athletic Academic Athletic Achievement award.
Luppov earned Academic All-Big Ten Conference and the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award. She was named Big Ten Conference Runner of the Week last season (Oct. 24, 2006) for her sixth-place performance at the EMU Classic.
Webster led the Maize and Blue to the finish line in five meets last season, including the Big Ten Championships where U-M won the conference team title. Webster placed no lower than fourth in all five events to earn first team All-Big Ten and Big Ten women's cross country Athlete of the Year honors.
Edwards, Luppov and Webster have helped the Wolverines receive the Leaders and Best award for five consecutive years. The Leaders and Best award honors the University of Michigan varsity team that earns the highest grade-point average.
The trio will lead U-M at the Notre Dame Invitational Friday (Sept. 28) in South Bend, Ind. Action begins at 4:15 p.m.
