IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 11 University of Michigan volleyball team was upset in five games at its Big Ten road opener, losing to Iowa 3-2 (30-28, 31-29, 26-30, 28-30, 10-15) Friday night (Sept. 28) in Carver-Hawkeye Arena during Hawkeye homecoming.
Michigan scrapped for wins in games one and two, overcoming an Iowa squad that played at the top of its game, but the bounces continued to go the Hawkeyes' way and the home squad took games three and four to force a fifth frame. In game five, Michigan and Iowa deadlocked at 5-5, but Wolverine miscues, including a number of late ballhandling errors, helped Iowa built a steadily increasing lead and close out the match, 15-10, to down U-M for the first time in 11 meetings.
Making her 100th career start, senior Katie Bruzdzinski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) led the Wolverines with 22 kills, breaking the 20-kill barrier for the third time this season. She also added three aces to her Big Ten leading tally at the service line.
Junior Beth Karpiak (La Grange, Ill./Lyons Township) had a career-best 19 kills in the loss, adding a pair of blocks, while sophomore Veronica Rood (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) finished one kill shy of her career record, tallying 16 terminations. Despite struggling with seven ballhandling errors, freshman setter Lexi Zimmerman (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) had a career-high 21 digs to go with 73 assists. Senior Stesha Selsky (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Marymount) finished with 25 digs.
Michigan will take day off and then resume Big Ten play Sunday (September 30) against No. 12 Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn. The match begins at 1 p.m. CDT in the Sports Pavilion.
