ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team made its home debut with a decisive 3-0 win over the Cincinnati Bearcats Friday (Sept. 7) on U-M Soccer Field. A solid defense combined with a potent offensive attack allowed the Maize and Blue to improve to 1-0-1 on the season.
The Wolverines were propelled to victory by three first-time goal scorers. Freshmen Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and Stephanie Crawford (Novi, Mich./Novi) and fifth-year senior Emily Kalmbach (Coto de Caza, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) each contributed their first career markers to the triumph.
U-M was able to put pressure on the Bearcats early in the first frame when graduate/senior Lindsey Cottrell (Kalamazoo, Mich./Central) lofted a pass up to Bowery. However, the freshman's header was gloved away by Bearcats' goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski. Minutes later, on a Michigan corner kick, the ball dribbled out to Bowery, who sent a shot sailing over the crossbar.
With time running down in the first half, Crawford came off the bench and opened the scoring in the contest. Bowery fed the ball through traffic to Crawford, who took one touch and blasted a shot that deflected off the Bearcat goalkeeper's outstretched hands and into the back of the net. The score at 37:39 gave the Wolverines the 1-0 lead.
Bowery tried to return the favor to Crawford on the following play down the field, feeding Crawford the ball within feet of the net, but her shot was knocked away by Erica Maine, who slid across the open goal mouth to deny the attempt.
The Maize and Blue extended its lead to 2-0 on a goal from Kalmbach at 47:15. Senior Katie Bohard (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) chased down a corner kick from Melissa Dobbyn (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson) and chipped it into a crowd in front of the goal. In the melee, Kalmbach got her head on the ball and knocked it into the net.
With the game in hand, sophomore/freshman Niki Moran (Lake Forest Ill./Lake Forest) slid a pass past a Bearcat defender to Katie Miler (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne). Poised at the line, the junior played the ball back to Bowery, who one-timed a shot off the crossbar and into the net. The goal at 73:24 gave Michigan the 3-0 advantage.
The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (Sept. 9) with another non-conference test against Marquette. The game is set for 1 p.m. at U-M Soccer Field.

QUOTES
Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On tonight's game ... "I thought they played really well and certainly we had many opportunities. We were dynamic with a lot of people having a good showing, so I was really happy."
On the dispersal of shots ... "I'm looking at the stats and our forwards are the ones with the most shots and thats the way it should be. We tell them, if you are going to be up front, what are you doing to make a difference And taking shots is one way they can do that. I thought they did a great job."
On the offensive output ... "We got a hold of the ball more (than vs. Notre Dame) and we were able to generate more offense. For us, when we were able to get the ball out wide tonight, we were able to get balls across the face of the net. We got two goals because of that."
On the play of Katie Bohard ... "She was really strong in the Notre Dame game. She caused problems for them. She is one of our fastest players. She's in her senior year, so she's playing with more confidence. She plays with a lot of heart and a lot of physical play. So today, again, she made a difference."
