Michigan Takes Down Defending NCAA Champ No. 2 Penn State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Event titles by freshman Thomas Kelley(Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and junior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) of the No. 6 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team led the Wolverines to a 356.950-354.400 upset win over the defending national champion No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions Saturday (Jan. 19) in Cliff Keen Arena.
The Wolverines were trailing slightly until the fifth rotation when strong performances on the parallel bars and high bar catapulted the home team past the defending national champions.
Co-captain senior/junior Arren Yoshimura(Denver, Colo./George Washington) stole the stage with his impressive routine on rings as he tied Penn State's Casey Sandy for the highest score in the event with a 15.300.
Freshman Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) was steady throughout the night. He earned the highest U-M score on the parallel bars (15.050) and shined with his floor and pommel horse routines as well.
Although Michigan started to climb past Penn State, the score was tight with a 297.200-296.700 U-M advantage heading into the final rotation.
Michigan rose to the challenge, landing the three highest horizontal bar scores in the meet. Senior Dan Rais(Livonia, Mich./Franklin) concluded his near flawless performance on the high bar (14.800) only to be lifted up by his teammates. The momentum carried onto Yoshimura, who pulled off an incredible routine of his own to earn a 14.750. Not to be outdone, Catrambone impressed the crowd and his teammates, earning the title with his score of 15.400.
Next Saturday (Jan. 26), Michigan travels to Oklahoma to take on the No. 3 Sooners in Norman, Okla., at 7 pm CST.
