
Michigan Dominates Western Michigan in Dual-Match Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. -- The No. 21-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team opened the 2008 dual-match season with a dominating 7-0 victory over No. 59-ranked Western Michigan in a neutral-site match Saturday morning (Jan. 26) at the YMCA Tennis Center. The Wolverines won two of three in doubles to earn the first team point and followed with six singles victories to secure their fifth straight win over the Broncos.
The 23rd-ranked doubles tandem of sophomore Mike Sroczynski(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) got Michigan off on the right track in doubles, posting an 8-3 decision over Michael Calderone and Kazuya Komada at No. 2 for their ninth win in 10 tries. Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) clinched the first team point for U-M, claiming an 8-4 triumph over Alex Birchmeier and Bryan Norville at No. 1. Navas and Maravic are 3-1 in 2007-08.
In his first career match at the No. 3 singles position, Sroczynski handed Norville a 6-4, 7-6(3) loss to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. Jung, ranked 55th nationally, was victorious in his dual-match singles debut, defeating Birchmeier by a 7-6(6), 6-2 margin to bring the Wolverines within one point of clinching the team victory.
Maravic's 7-6(9), 6-2 win over Kevin Hayward at the top spot sealed the outcome and moved Maravic's overall record to 9-2. Junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) kept things rolling with a 6-3, 7-6(0) decision over Komada at No. 4, and Navas knocked off Calderone in a super-tiebreaker at No. 5, 7-6(5), 1-6, 1-0(7), for U-M's sixth team point.
Freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) completed the singles sweep, as he battled back to beat Alejandro Staub, 0-6, 6-4, 1-0(10), at No. 6 for his first career dual-match singles victory.
The Wolverines return to the YMCA Tennis Center tonight to take on host Ball State at 6 p.m.
