PARDUBICE, Czech Republic -- Freshman forward Carl Hagelin(Sodertalje, Sweden) of the University of Michigan hockey team earned a silver medal with Team Sweden at the 2008 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. Sweden lost 3-2 in overtime to Canada in the tournament finale on Saturday (Jan. 5) evening.
Hagelin, who is the first Swede to ever play for U-M, had zero points in six WJC contests for his native country. He is the 12th Wolverine overall to earn a medal at the World Junior Championship.
Team Sweden won all four of its preliminary round games, including a win over Canada, and advanced to the tournament finals by defeating Russia in overtime in the semifinals. Sweden earned a medal at the WJC for the first time since 1996 when it also won silver.
Three other Wolverines were also participating at the 2008 World Junior Championship -- sophomore defenseman Chris Summers(Milan, Mich.) and freshman forwards Max Pacioretty(New Canaan, Conn.) and Matt Rust(Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each skated for Team USA. The Americans finished fourth in the tournament after losing in the bronze medal game to Russia, 4-2. Team USA went 4-0-0 in the prelims, but then lost to Canada in the semifinals.
Summers was the only U-M player to earn a point in the tournament -- he had one assist. Pacioretty and Rust each accumulated eight penalty minutes in six games.
