BOSTON, Mass. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team suffered a 7-2 defeat at No. 7 Boston University on Saturday (Oct. 25) at Agganis Arena. The Wolverines were able to capitalize on justtwo of their 12 power plays. Meanwhile, the Terriers scoredfive power-play goals on nine chances.
Forced to kill an early penalty, U-M had three straight power plays at 5:36, 8:51 and 11:10. The Wolverines registered four shots on goal, none of which found the back of the Terrier net. Tim Miller(Davisburg, Mich.) had a fair chance to put U-M on the board in the second power play, but he was bothered by a BU defender in front and goalie Kieran Millan swept the puck aside.
Kevin Gilroy opened the scoring with a rebound goal at 15:01. Nick Bonino flicked a shot from high outside the left circle that hit U-M goaltender Billy Sauer(Walworth, N.Y.) high in the chest and fell to the ice. On his backhand, Gilroy got just enough of the puck to lift it up and over Sauer into the net.
Thirty seconds later, Carl Hagelin(Sodertalje, Sweden) was stoned when he broke free on a cycle play in the low slot and tried to backhand a shot through Millan's legs.
The Terriers went up 2-0 at 18:49 on a power-play goal by Chris Connolly. U-M fumbled a potential clearing attempt beside its own, which allowed Connolly to take control and wrap the puck underneath a surprised Sauer.
Just over four minutes into the second period, the Maize and Blue earned a two-man advantage for a span of 1:04. U-M controlled the puck well in BU's zone, but Millan stopped two shots and the Terrier defense broke up a number of other Michigan plays.
The Terriers scored their second power-play marker of the night at 6:52 to go up 3-0. Jason Lawrence scored from the right of the crease following a well-executed rush through U-M's zone by Chris Higgins and Colin Wilson that left Sauer little chance to make a save.
BU pushed its lead to 4-0 with a four-on-three power-play tally at 17:20. With U-M's defenders collapsed in the slot, defenseman Colby Cohen set up at the edge of the right circle and snapped a shot high into U-M's net.
Robbie Czarnik's (Washington, Mich.) power-play goal at 1:27 of the third period -- the first of his career -- made the score 4-1. Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) lugged the puck up the right wing and dropped the puck back to Czarnik at the right half-boards. Czarnik took a stride towards the center of the ice and snapped the puck short-side over Millan's shoulder. Chad Langlais(Spokane, Wash.) also earned an assist.
BU answered right back with its fourth power-play goal of the game at 5:49. Lawrence deposited a centering pass behind Bryan Hogan(Highland, Mich.), who relieved Sauer to start the third stanza.
Nick Bonino then scored at 12:52 of the third period; just two seconds after a penalty to the Wolverines had expired.
The Wolverines and Terriers traded power-play goals in the final four minutes. Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ontario) scored on a feed from Hagelin at 16:43, while Brian Strait scored for BU at 17:32.
The Wolverines return to CCHA play next weekend (Oct. 31-Nov. 1) when they host Ohio State for two games at Yost Ice Arena. Both contests will start at 7:35 p.m.
