Two Wolverines Earn Conference Honors -- Senior Jake Stacy (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and senior/junior Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) were selected as the Big Ten's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 6) after leading the Maize and Blue to a pair of victories over ranked opponents. Stacy earned conference offensive honors after scoring the game-winning goals in each of Michigan's two victories last week. Sperry was in goal for both matches and made eight saves while allowing just one goal. Stacy was also named to the National Team of the Week by both Soccer America (Oct. 7) and College Soccer News (Oct. 6).
There's a First Time for Everything -- With last week's wins over No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 20 Indiana, the Wolverines beat ranked opponents in consecutive games for the first time in school history. U-M's victory over Notre Dame was the first against a top-10 opponent since a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Connecticut on September 1, 2004.
There's a First Time for Everything (Part Two) -- Michigan's victories over Notre Dame and Indiana were the first wins in school history against the Irish and the Hoosiers. The Wolverines now have a 1-3-1 all-time record against Notre Dame and a 1-9-1 record all-time against Indiana.
Scoring Touch -- Junior Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) leads active U-M players with 17 career markers and is fourth on the U-M career list. He needs five goals to catch Mike White (22, 2000-03) in the hallowed top three. After scoring the game-winners against both Notre Dame and Indiana, Stacy is fifth on the all-time list with 14 goals, and junior Mauro Fuzetti's (Houston, Texas/Stratford) 13 career tallies rank him sixth in U-M career scoring. Senior Michael Holody(Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) also ranks in the top 10 in career scoring, sitting eighth with nine career goals.
What A Playmaker -- Stacy is edging his way up the career assists list. He currently holds the third-highest assist total, needing one more helper to push him past Mychal Turpin (19, 2001-04) and into second place all-time. Senior Steve Bonnell(St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) sits tied with Kevin Robinson (11, 2000-03) for seventh all-time.
That's The Point -- Stacy's two goals last week pushed him to 47 career points, and past Adam Bruh (46, 2002-05) into fourth place on the all-time list. Marosevic's 40 points rank him sixth on the U-M career points list. With his goal and assist against Notre Dame (Oct. 1), Fuzetti has now recorded 35 career points, ranking him seventh all-time. Bonnell also ranks in the U-M top 10 in career points, ranking ninth, two points shy of Kevin Robinson (25, 2000-03).
Trying Their Best -- Several Wolverines have exceeded their previous career highs this season. With his goals against Notre Dame (Oct. 1) and Indiana (Oct. 4), Stacy continued to add to his career high in goals. Stacy has seven tallies this season; his previous high was four during the 2007 campaign. With a goal and an assist against the Irish, Fuzetti continued to improve his career highs in goals and points. Fuzetti has now registered seven goals and 17 points this season; his previous highs were four goals and 10 assists with both set in 2007. Junior/sophomore Matt Schmitt(Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) has a career-high eight points on the season, and has posted six helpers already to set a new personal standard. Junior/sophomore Cam Cameron(Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) has three helpers on the season after chipping in one during the 2007 campaign.
Television Stars -- Michigan will make its second appearance of the season on the Big Ten Network on Saturday, Oct. 18, when it hosts in-state rival Michigan State. Game time between the Wolverines and Spartans is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the new U-M Soccer Complex. This will be Michigan's second appearance of the season on BTN. Michigan's 1-1 tie at Wisconsin on Sept. 27 was also televised by the network.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Western Michigan -- The Broncos travel to Ann Arbor with a 2-9-1 record after dropping a pair of contests at Buffalo and Canisius last weekend. Senior midfielder Jordan Fylonenko has scored a pair of goals to lead the Broncos in scoring. Michigan leads the all-time series with Western Michigan, 3-1-0. The Wolverines and Broncos last met on October 12, 2005 -- a 2-1 double-overtime victory for WMU in Kalamazoo.
THE WEEK THAT WAS
Michigan won a pair of games last week, knocking off two opponents it had never previously beaten. On Wednesday (Oct. 1), the Maize and Blue defeated No. 8 Notre Dame, 3-1. Junior Mauro Fuzetti(Houston, Texas/Stratford) and junior Peri Marosevic(Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) each tallied a goal and an assist against the Irish. The Wolverines then knocked off No. 20 Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday (Oct. 4), 1-0. Senior Jake Stacy(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) scored the only goal of the contest as Michigan recorded its first win over a Big Ten opponent since beating Wisconsin, 1-0, on November 2, 2006.
GETTING SOME NEW DIGS
The Wolverines will play their first game at the new U-M Soccer Complex on Sunday (Oct. 12) against Western Michigan. The brand new home of Michigan soccer will feature a regulation, lighted competition field and separate practice fields for both the men's and women's programs. The fields are located west of the tennis complex on South State Street. This is the second move for the Maize and Blue, who began varsity competition at Elbel Field in 2000 before moving into the U-M Soccer Field, a place it called home from 2001-2007.
