YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team kicked off the preseason portion of its 2008-09 schedule with several representatives competing unattached at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 1). The Wolverines boasted seven individual placewinners between the freshman/sophomore and open divisions, including freshman Zac Stevens(Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS), junior/sophomore Aaron Hynes(Mt. Morris, Mich./Flint Kearsley HS), freshman Hunter Collins(Gilroy, Calif./Gilroy HS) and junior/sophomore Eddie Phillips(Woodland, Mich./Lakewood HS), who all placed fourth at their respective weight classes.
The open tournament marked the collegiate debut for Stevens and Collins, who advanced to the semifinal round at 133 and 184 pounds, respectively, and completed the event with identical 3-2 records. Both U-M rookies earned pins in their first collegiate bouts. Stevens accumulated a sizable 12-point advantage against Cleveland State's Josh Palivoda before sticking the Viking wrestler late in the final period. After sacrificing an early lead against Purdue's Jake Fleckenstein to fall 12-9 in the semifinals, Stevens split a pair of contests in the wrestlebacks, ultimately losing 5-2 in a rematch against Eastern Michigan's Chris Jenkins in the third-place match.
Collins outscored his 184-pound opposition 41-18 with a first-round pin and dominant 19-1 technical fall in the wrestlebacks. The Wolverine wrestler wasted little time before pinning Brockport's Josh Bloom in his first match, scoring a quick takedown before threading the needle to stack up his opponent at the 2:04 mark. He cruised into the semifinals before falling to Michigan State's Ian Hinston 8-7 after allowing a pair of first-period takedowns. His second loss came in the third-place contest when he gave up a quick, first-period pin against Purdue's Andrew Kissel, a 2008 NCAA qualifier.
Hynes earned his second EMU Open placing performance in three years, adding to his runner-up finish two years ago, posting a 3-2 record en route to fourth place at 157 pounds. After a pair of early victories, including a second-round technical fall, Hynes suffered a narrow 6-5 loss to Virignia's Danny Gonzer in the semifinal round to drop into the wrestlebacks. Hynes used two takedowns and a pair of reversals to defeat Navy's Joel Ahern 9-7 in the consolations semifinals before falling to Olivet's Jason Brew in the third-place contest.
Phillips rallied from a second-round loss with four straight wins in the heavyweight wrestlebacks, including two over Michigan teammates freshman Ben Apland(Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South HS) and junior/sophomore Chad Bleske(Washington, Mich./Romeo HS). Phillips knocked off Purdue's returning starter Chris Kasten 5-3 in the consolation semifinals before falling 7-3 in a rematch against Pittsburgh's Ryan Tomei for third place.
Sophomore/freshman Jacob Johnson(Reed City, Mich./Reed City HS) posted a 4-3 mark en route to a sixth-place finish at 149 pounds in his first collegiate competition. Johnson, who did not compete in his first season at U-M, reversed seventh-ranked Jake Patacsil of Purdue to his back in the waning moments of second period of his quarterfinal match but could not secure the pin before time expired. Despite earning a takedown in the third period and riding out the two-time NCAA qualifier for the remainder of the bout, Johnson could not overcome the sizable deficit, falling 12-6 to drop into the consolation bracket. He split his matches in the wrestlebacks, taking sixth place after giving up a pin to Indiana's Alex Warren midway through the second period of the placement match.
Freshmen Bret Marsh(Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and Joel Vallier(Gladstone, Mich./Gladstone HS) rounded out Michigan's placewinners with top-six showings at 125 and 197 pounds, respectively, in the freshman/sophomore division. Marsh posted a 3-1 mark, outscoring his opposition 29-2 to advance to the semifinals before defaulting out in the wrestlebacks. Vallier earned a first-period pin against Mercyhurst's Jeff Hawryliw in his first collegiate match to pick up his lone victory of the tournament.
Michigan will continue early-season competition next Sunday (Nov. 9) at the annual Michigan State Open in East Lansing, Mich. U-M participants will again compete unattached.
