
Navas Reaches Consolation Final at Big Ten Singles

MADISON, Wis. -- Senior Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team concluded main-draw action with a third-round defeat, while junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla../Tampa Preparatory School) advanced to the consolation final with three wins at the Big Ten Singles Championship today (Sunday, Nov. 2) at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
Aarts, who was the No. 9 seed in the main draw, picked up two wins on Saturday (Nov. 1) to advance to the third round but fell in today's third-round match. Aarts took on Slavko Bijelica from Purdue. Bijelica took the first set 6-2, but Aarts battled back in the second set before falling 7-6 to Bijelica, who will play in the semifinal on Monday (Nov. 3).
In consolation action, Navas won three matches today to advance to the consolation final on Monday. In opening-round action yesterday, Navas picked up a 6-3, 7-6(6) win over Northwestern's Alex Sanborn and reached the consolation quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-2 win today over Iowa's Tom Murziewicz.
Navas then reached the semifinals with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 win over Purdue's Patrick Rose and advanced to the final with a 7-5, 5-7, 10-4 win over Northwestern's Tobias Reitz. Navas will take on Minnesota's Julian Dehn for the consolation title tomorrow.
Sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan,/Laurel Springs School) also reached the consolation third round. The redshirt freshman picked up a 7-6(8), 6-4 win over Patrick Dwyer from Iowa and advanced to the third round in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 over Purdue's Eric Ramos before falling to Penn State's Jason Lee, 7-5, 5-7 10-4 to conclude action at the Big Ten Singles Championship.
Junior Matt Parks (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) also took part in the consolation draw. He fell in the first round to Michigan State's Scott Rasmussen, 6-3, 7-5.
Navas is the lone Wolverine who will compete tomorrow (Monday, Nov. 3) as he plays in the consolation final at Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
