Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the penalty killing... "We were pretty good. We can kill a few penalties. We can't kill nine. I don't know how many minutes that added up to, but that's too much. We came on this trip to be a disciplined team. We had no idea how the referees would be calling penalties this year in this league. We understand that they've made changes. We wanted to stay out of the box. We pretty much did that last night -- although we got down two-men short and it cost us a goal. Tonight, you saw the game."
On Billy Sauer's play... "Billy gave us every chance. In the second period, our backs were against the wall with penalties and we're trying to play disciplined hockey and not take penalties. But it didn't work out. I can't tell you they were undisciplined, but we just took too many penalties. Billy played terrific. He gave our team every chance and we came up short for him."
On not providing goal support for Sauer... "It's not a plan and certainly it's not by design. Our kids are working hard, but that's the way it's seeming to look like. That's the way it looks on paper. We had a few scoring chances, we needed to capitalize on them and we didn't do it. Last weekend, we scored one goal. Last night was just one of those nights maybe. Obviously, tonight goals were hard to come by. We couldn't get one. It was a 0-0 game. All we needed to do was get one good shot and we couldn't do it."
U-M Junior Chris Summers
On Billy Sauer... "He played phenomenally. If it wasn't for him, it would have been a whole different story. We wouldn't have been 0-0 going into the third period. That gave us a little confidence. But it was the penalty issues. We've had an issue with that in previous weekends, so it's something that's a mental thing, an individual thing. We'll work on it and make sure that guys are being held accountable during practice this week."
On what prevented the offense from getting going... "It's hard to get on a roll especially when you're in the box for the whole second period and part of the third. To get any type of offensive chances you're going to have to be five on five. That kind of helped them with momentum. That's just the way game played out with all the special teams."
