Harmsen, Shotwell and Switzer Named 2009 Team Captains

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field coaching staff announced Monday (Dec. 15) that fifth-year senior Dan Harmsen(Rockford, Mich./Rockford), junior Frank Shotwell(Medina, Ohio/Medina) and senior Justin Switzer(Waterford, Mich./Kettering) have been named team tri-captains for the 2009 season.
Harmsen earned All-America honors in 2008 as part of the 4x400 relay squad that placed fourth at the NCAA Championships (3:04.64). The fifth-year senior was a two-time Big Ten champion in 2008, winning both the 400-meter hurdles (51.12) and the 4x400-meter relay (3:08.39) titles.
Shotwell returns this season after a record-breaking 2008. During the indoor season, Shotwell set the school record in the heptathlon with a score of 5,525 points. Shotwell went on to win the first heptathlon title in school history at the Big Ten Championships as he accumulated 5,503 points over the course of the two-day championship. Shotwell carried his strong performances over from the indoor season into the outdoor season, winning the first Big Ten title in the decathlon in school history with a school-record 7,362 points.
Switzer returns for his senior season after a strong 2008 that saw him score at both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten Championships. Switzer finished fifth as part of the distance medley relay at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and fourth in the 800-meters with a time of 1:50.73 at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Switzer also set new personal bests in both the 800-meters (1:48.48) and the mile (4:03.43).
