
Michigan Dominates Way to EMU Invite Title

YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team won 11-of-13 events on Saturday (Dec. 5) to win the two-day Eastern Michigan Invitational at Jones Natatorium. Michigan finished with 1,102.50 points, while host Eastern Michigan scored 917.50 points to finish second. Michigan won all five events in the evening session with meet-record times.
The Wolverines started the evening session with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of senior Hannah Smith(Dexter, Mich./Dexter), sophomore Natasha Moodie(Miramar, Fla./Miramar), senior Payton Johnson(Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and junior Margaret Kelly(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished in 1:31.37. The time was not only the Wolverines' first consideration time of the season in the event but was also a meet and pool record.
Michigan's second squad of junior Leigh Cole(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), freshman Alexa Mehesan (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley), freshman Liz Koselka(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and senior Noelle Martin(Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) took second with a time of 1:35.40.
In the 500-yard freestyle, Kelly coasted to an easy win as she finished in 4:48.63, over three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Kelly's time broke the meet record and was both a consideration time and a new career best for the junior.
Smith continued the Wolverines' record-breaking streak, finishing first with a meet-record time of 2:02.70 in the 200-yard individual medley, a new career best for the senior. Payton Johnson finished in second place with a time of 2:05.51.
The Maize and Blue continued its strong swimming in the 50-yard freestyle as Moodie and Cole took the top two spots. Moodie increased the Wolverines' streak of meet records to four straight as she finished in just 22.91, almost two seconds ahead of Cole, who touched the wall in second with a time of 24.13.
Michigan made it 5-for-5 with a win a in the final event of the meet -- the 400-yard medley relay. The Michigan team of Smith, Kelly, freshman Caitlin Dauw(St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) and Moodie finished in 3:45.68, shattering both the meet and pool records. Smith gave the Wolverines a great start, finishing the backstroke leg three seconds ahead of the field.
In the morning session, U-M started with a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Michigan's "A" squad of Smith, senior Christine Nichols(Fairfax, Va./WT Woodson), Kelly and Martin won the event with a time of 1:44.85, almost two seconds ahead of the Wolverines' second relay squad of freshman Liz Johnson(Milford, Mich./Milford), sophomore Morgan Rosentreter(Okemos, Mich./Okemos), Payton Johnson and Cole.
Kelly followed up the relay win with a first-place finish and a new career-best time of 4:12.27 in the 400-yard individual medley. The junior took control early and coasted to a win, finishing nearly 20 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
In the 100-yard butterfly, the Maize and Blue swept the top three spots with Dauw touching the wall first with a time of 56.24. She was soon followed by senior Lori Morton(Portage, Mich./Central), who finished second with a time of 56.55, and Martin, who finished third with a time of 56.78.
Smith extended Michigan's win streak to four straight events to start the day with a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Smith took an early lead and held off Eastern Michigan's Alisa Ricard over the final 50 yards to pick up the win.
Michigan's final win in the pool during the morning session came in the 800-yard freestyle relay as the squad of Johnson, Koselka, Martin and Cole finished in first place with a time of 7:35.08.
The Michigan divers had a strong showing in the two-day meet as freshman Amanda Lohman(Pittsburg, Pa./Upper St. Clair) swept the events with wins in both one-meter and three-meter diving, while sophomore Stephanie O'Callaghan(Howell, Mich./Howell) finished third in one-meter diving and second in three-meter diving.
In the one-meter event, Lohman squeaked out a three-point win over Toledo's Brittany Teneyck, scoring 264.75 points. O'Callaghan scored 250.45 points to finish in third.
Lohman followed up her one-meter win with a new career-best score of 291.90 in the three-meter event. Lohman dominated the event, finishing 24 points ahead of O'Callaghan, who placed second with a score of 267.90.
Michigan will return to the pool following the semester break for the Indiana Invitational Jan. 9-10 in Bloomington, Ind.
