FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced Monday (Dec. 8) that University of Michigan ice hockey freshman David Wohlberg(South Lyon, Mich.) earned CCHA Offensive Player of the Week honors for his five points (2-3-5) during a weekend home-and-home sweep of intrastate rival Michigan State.
On Friday (Dec. 5), Wohlberg put up two goals in a 6-1 routing of the Spartans. He scored his first of the night off a pass from across the crease from Louie Caporusso(Woodbridge, Ontario) at 8:44 of the middle stanza. The marker, his second of the season, proved to be the gamewinner. In the third period, the rookie lit the lamp again to cap his second two-goal effort of the season.
In Michigan's come-from-behind 5-3 victory on Saturday night (Dec. 6), Wohlberg turned from the scorer to the playmaker of the Wolverines' power play and top line. He began the night assisting on both of Travis Turnbull's (Chesterfield, Mo.) power-play markers just 50 seconds apart to give the Maize and Blue its first lead of the night. In the final two minutes of the game, Wohlberg redirected a pass from Aaron Palushaj(Northville, Mich.) across the crease to Caporusso for the decisive goal in the road triumph over the Spartans.
Saturday marked the first multiple-assist game of Wohlberg's career and the three-point effort set a career high. Overall, Wohlberg's 2-3-5 weekend was his best to date and proved to be enough to earn him his first CCHA Player of the Week accolades.
Wohlberg leads all Maize and Blue rookies in points and is tied for third on the CCHA's freshman scoring chart.
The Wolverines have time to rest before they return to the ice at Joe Louis Arena for the 44th Annual Great Lakes Invitational tournament. The defending GLI champions take on Michigan Tech on Saturday, Dec. 27, in the first game of the weekend. The puck is scheduled to drop at 3:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the U-M Athletic Department Ticket Office.
