STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team extended its winning streak to seven matches and remained perfect in Big Ten Conference play at 4-0 with a 5-2 victory over No. 36-ranked Penn State Monday afternoon (March 24) at the Sarni Tennis Center. The Wolverines held a 3-2 lead with two singles matches left on the courts, and junior Peter Aarts(Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) and freshman Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) stepped up and posted three-set wins at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, to clinch U-M's 13th team victory in 15 matches this season.
Michigan's No. 20-ranked tandem of senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) and sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) got back on a winning track with an 8-4 decision over Ryan Gormley and Adam Slagter at No. 2. The Wolverine duo holds an undefeated record of 4-0 at the second position this year.
After the Nittany Lions drew even with a tight 8-6 win at No. 1, Madden and junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) delivered an 8-4 triumph over Eddie Bourchier and James Dwyer at No. 3 to clinch U-M's third straight doubles point. Madden and Mazlin, who are ranked 56th nationally, hold a team-best 12-2 dual-match record and have won four straight.
Mazlin carried over his strong play into singles action and handily defeated Bourchier by a 6-3, 6-2 score at No. 4 to put the Wolverines in front 2-0. Mazlin has won 12 of 14 dual matches and carries a team-best seven-match winning streak.
Penn State struck back once again with a straight-set victory at No. 3, but Maravic put Michigan within one point of the team win with his thrilling 6-7(4), 7-6(6), 6-3 triumph over No. 52-ranked Michael James at No. 1. Maravic, who is ranked 61st in the country, is now one victory shy of achieving his third career 20-win season (19-6).
Slagter kept PSU alive with a 6-7(4), 6-4, 7-6(4) victory over freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS), but Aarts closed things out a 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 win over Dwyer at No. 5.
