PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team closed a four-match road swing with a convincing 6-1 victory over Brown Saturday afternoon (March 8) in the Pizzitola Sports Center. The Wolverines dropped the doubles point but rebounded to take all six singles matches and conclude their two-week road trip with a 3-1 record. At 9-2, U-M is off to its best start since the 1999 dual-match season.
The Bears (8-7) took an early 1-0 lead by claiming a doubles sweep, but junior Andrew Mazlin(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) put the Maize and Blue on the scoreboard with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kendrick Au at No. 4 singles. Mazlin has won eight of 10 matches at the fourth position this year. Senior Matko Maravic(Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) snapped a two-match losing skid, defeating Chris Lee by a 7-5, 6-2 count at No. 2 to give Michigan a 2-1 lead. It was Maravic's 80th career singles victory (80-52). Freshman Jason Jung(Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) won for the second time in two days, as his 6-4, 6-4 decision over Basu Ratnam at No. 3 put the Wolverines within one point of clinching the team win.
Sophomore Mike Sroczynski's(Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) first career victory at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 over Saurabh Kohli, sealed the outcome. The win moved Sroczynski's dual-match record to 7-3. Sophomore George Navas(Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) was victorious for the first time in four tries, as he defeated Noah Gardner in straight sets (6-4, 7-5) at No. 5 for U-M's fifth team point. Junior Scott Bruckmann(Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephen's Episcopal School) returned to the singles lineup for the first time since Jan. 26 and beat Sam Garland (6-3, 6-3) at No. 6 to complete the third singles sweep of the season for Michigan.
