
Waithe Advances at NCAA Outdoor Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Fifth-year senior Stann Waithe(Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) kicked off the University of Michigan men's track and field team's participation at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships on Wednesday evening (June 11) by qualifying for the 400-meter semifinals at Drake Stadium on Jim Duncan Track. The Wolverine sprinter earned the last spot in the semifinals after posting the 16th quickest time during the preliminary round.
Making his third appearance at the national event and first since 2006, Waithe took the outside of the track in the second heat and kept pace with the leaders, registering a time of 46.84 to claim fourth place. With the top-two finishers in each section earning automatic advancement to the semifinal round, Waithe finished two positions outside of the two guaranteed bids and had to wait through three heats before finding out he made the top 16 that advance to the semifinals, scheduled for Friday night at 8:25 CDT.
Sophomore Frank Shotwell(Medina, Ohio, Medina HS), the 2008 Big Ten decathlon champion, sits 23rd in the decathlon standings (3,336 points) after completing the opening half of the full 10-event rotation. Highlighting Shotwell's busy slate was a 19th-place finish (11.30) in the 100-meter dash (796 points), followed by a 20th-place finish in the 400-meter dash 52.29 (712 points).
Shotwell will finish up the decathlon competition Thursday, while junior Adam Harris(Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North HS) will race in the first round of the 200-meter dash at 5:25 p.m. CDT and the Wolverines' 4x400-meter relay team will run in the semifinal round at 7:55 p.m.
