COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Freshman Carl Buchanon(South Bend, Ind./Clay HS) of the University of Michigan men's track and field team finished fourth (51.81) in the 400-meter hurdles at the USATF Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships, held Friday through Sunday (June 20-22) at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
On Saturday, the finals were delayed for more than two hours after thunder and lightning suspended the meet. After the rain delay, Buchanon placed fourth overall among the nine-man field with a personal-best and World Junior Championships qualifying time of 51.81 on a damp track.
Buchanon entered the finals as the No. 4 seed after winning his preliminary heat Friday with a World Junior Championships qualifying time of 52.34.
The 2008 NCAA 400m-hurdles title holder Jeshua Anderson of Washington State won the event with a meet and stadium-record time of 49.28. Johnny Dutch of South Carolina, the 2007 Pan-American Junior champion, was second (49.74) while William Wynne of Titans Track placed third (50.42).
The top two finishers in each event earned an automatic berth on the U.S. team contingent upon achieving a qualifying standard.
The 12th-annual 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships are slated for July 8-13 in Bydgoszcz, Poland.
