EUGENE, Ore. -- Two former members of the University of Michigan men's track and field team -- Jeff Porter (2004-07) and Alan Webb (2002) -- participated in the 2008 USA Track and Field Olympic Trials this past week at Oregon's Hayward Field, but neither secured a spot on the roster for the upcoming Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Bidding for his second Olympics berth, Webb finished fifth in the 1,500-meter run final Sunday (July 6). Webb was in last for the first 600 meters of the final before moving forward to join the lead pack. He stayed in fourth until crossing the line fifth (3:41.62). One of only six runners in the final who had achieved an Olympic "A" standard, Webb needed a top-three finish in the event to make the team roster.
Porter, the 2007 NCAA indoor 60-meter hurdles national champion and school record holder in the event (7.64), was unable to reach the semifinals of the 110-meter hurdles after finishing 20th (13.73) in the quarterfinal round Saturday (July 5); the top 16 advanced to the semis. Porter was sixth in his preliminary heat (13.78) Saturday morning and moved on with the fifth best time among the non-automatic qualifiers.
