Maloney has earned ABCA Regional and Big Ten Coach of the Year honors each of the last two seasons, and provided the Big Ten with its 2008 Pitcher of the Year (Zach Putnam) and Player of the Year (Nate Recknagel); Putnam and Recknagel were two of five Wolverines selected in this year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Maloney's players have combined for 22 first-team All-Big Ten selections in his six seasons at Michigan, including four players named to five positions on the 2008 squad; he had three in each of his first three seasons and four in both 2006 and 2007.
This past season, Michigan captured its third straight Big Ten Conference title, the Big Ten Tournament title and hosted its first NCAA Regional since 1986. The Wolverines also reached the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight year and posted 40 wins for the fourth straight season. With a 26-5 record in Big Ten play, U-M broke the record for conference wins in a season formerly held by Ohio State (25, 1994 and '99).
Maloney has 237-126 career record at Michigan and is 493-270-1 all-time after spending seven years as Ball State's head coach.
