Elliot and his familys struggle have touched the lives of many people, including the members of the Michigan football family. Brocks story, in particular, has been an inspirational one for coaches and players. Following the crash, Brocks prognosis was grim. His prospects of ever walking again were slim, but with rehabilitation and determination, Brock has begun the painful steps to recovery and continues to work towards his goal of one day walking again.
Michigan speaks about the situation:
OFFENSIVE LINE COACH GREG FREY
Its inspiring to see a young man go through a tragedy like that and respond with faith and respond with family and work ethic. Its unbelievable. It puts into focus what we do every day. When you see how Elliot and his family respond to this, you see how theyll always hold a special place in my heart.
FIFTH/SENIOR OFFENSIVE LINEMAN SEAN GRIFFIN
Brock has been inspirational. They told him hes never walking again and coach Rod told us that in two or three weeks he was able to move his legs again and was able to stand up a couple months later. To be dealt so much misfortune and show that much heart and strength is an inspiration to everybody.
FRESHMAN QUARTERBACK JUSTIN FEAGIN
Every day when we come out in the sun and were tired and we think were beat and cant go anymore, we think about Brock. He is someone who was told he would never walk again and hes progressing. Whenever we get down on ourselves, we think of Elliots situation. Hes hurt more than any of us and he can still do it, so we push through it.
JUNIOR/SOPHOMORE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN STEVE SCHILLING
We learned about it last year at the bowl game and as I got to know Elliot more I tried to help him out as much as I could. We cant imagine what hes going through but weve come together to help him and his family any way we can.
FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE LINEMAN RICKY BARNUM
A lot of freshmen go through homesickness and adjust to camp but what Elliot had to go through takes a lot of courage and strength. He has made an impact on my life this summer.
To help offset the costs of the Mealer familys enormous medical bills, the Michigan football team is participating in a charity event, Bowling for Brock, Wednesday afternoon (Aug. 20) at Colonial Lanes in Ann Arbor. Proceeds from the event will go to the Mealer family to help with Brocks treatment at the U-M Medical Center.
