ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team closed out the exhibition portion of its 2008 schedule with a 2-1 victory over Cincinnati Saturday (Aug. 23) on Mitchell Field. Senior Steve Bonnell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Detroit Country Day) scored the game-winning goal and picked up an assist for the Maize and Blue.

Junior Mauro Fuzetti (Houston, Texas/Stratford) chipped in a goal and junior/sophomore Cam Cameron (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) added a helper in the game. Senior/junior goalkeeper Patrick Sperry (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) played the full 90 minutes in goal for Michigan, making one save.
The Maize and Blue opened the scoring just five minutes into the contest on a Fuzetti header to give Michigan an early 1-0 lead. Bonnell made a run down the right flank and crossed the ball to a waiting Fuzetti who headed the ball underneath the Cincinnati goalkeeper at the back post from six yards out.
Michigan came close to increasing its lead in the 37th minute when junior Peri Marosevic (Rockford, Ill./Edison Academy) and senior/junior Daniel Gray (Setaket, N.Y./Chaminade) connected on a give-and-go, but the shot sailed shot just wide and the Wolverines settled for a 1-0 lead at the break.
Cincinnati evened the score in the 55th minute when Chris Mitchell redirected a cross past a diving Sperry. Mitchell found space inside the six-yard box and tucked the cross into the net past the Michigan keeper.
Bonnell then scored the decider in the 78th minute to put the Wolverines back on top for good, 2-1. Cameron possessed the ball 25 yards from goal and found Bonnell, who was making a diagonal run. Bonnell then slotted the ball past the helpless netminder and into the cage.
Michigan returns to action next Friday (Aug. 29) when it opens the regular season against Wisconsin-Green Bay. The game will be played in Saline, Mich., on Saline High School's Hornet Stadium Field. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
