OXFORD, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team clinched a victory to conclude the season-opening road swing, edging out Miami (Ohio) 1-0 on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 31) on the Miami Soccer Field. The win marks the first under head coach Greg Ryan who is in his first year at the helm for the Maize and Blue.
Freshman Kelsey Rogind(Emerald Hills, Calif./St. Francis) scored the contest's lone goal -- the first marker of her career -- and senior Madison Gates(Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) made it stand up with a five-save performance for the fourth shutout of her career.
The two teams battled to a stalemate through the opening half, with neither team able to crack the opposing goalkeeper. Gates had to make only one save in the first half, a sprawling stop to stymie Sara Lund.
The second half saw a much more offensively aggressive Maize and Blue punch through with the Rogind marker at 47:02 to take the 1-0 lead. Freshman Clare Stachel(Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) carried the ball through several RedHawk defenders and down toward the goal line on the right side. She sent a cross through the box to the foot of Rogind who simply had to change the flight path into the back of the net.
The Wolverines will play host to Dayton at Eastern Michigan's Scicluna Field in Ypsilanti, Mich., on Friday (Sept. 5). The game time for the contest is yet to be determined.

Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the game... "I think what is happening with this team is we are learning so quickly and basically when we've gone into halftime, we've made adjustments that allow us to do better against these opponents. Because we are just now starting off as a team, playing so many freshmen, we are constantly improving. We were better in the first half today than we were in the first half against Cincinnati on Friday. I just think with young players that you improve every time you step on the field."
