Bruckmann, Maravic and Mazlin Named ITA Scholar-Athletes

SKILLMAN, N.J. C The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced Friday (Aug. 8) that seniors Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) and Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and graduated senior Matko Maravic(2005-08) of the University of Michigan mens tennis team have been named ITA Scholar-Athletes for the 2007-08 season. The award marks the first career ITA academic honor for each student-athlete.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete statusa player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
Bruckmann posted a 13-8 overall singles record and went 2-0 in dual matches at Nos. 5 and 6 last year. He also went 9-3 in doubles actionduring his junior campaign. Bruckmann earned his second Academic All-Big Ten Conference award and earned the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award in 2007-08.
Mazlin tallied a 26-9 overall singles record, includinga 20-6 dual-match mark(7-3 at No. 3 and 13-3 at No. 4), and concluded the season ranked No. 22 in the Midwest Region. He also notched a 22-9 overall doubles record, including a 13-2 dual-match record at No. 3 withsophomore Chris Madden(Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS). Mazlin's other awards include Academic All-Big Ten Conference honors, the U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award and being named Most Valuable Player by his teammates.
Maravic concluded his four-year career with a 88-57 singles record and a 90-43 doubles record. He was a three-time Academic All-Big selection and a four-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement award winner. Maravic also earned ITA All-America status in doubles in 2007 and was the Big Ten singles champion in 2006. In his senior season, he posted a 23-11 overall singles record and a 19-12 doubles record. He concluded the season ranked No. 63 nationally and No. 9 regionally in the final ITA rankings. In his final season, Maravic was named Michigans Big Ten Medal of Honor recipient and was a ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic at-large second team all-district selection. He was also a co-captain and was voted Michigans Leadership Award recipient by his teammates.
It marks the fourth consecutive season that the Wolverines have had at least two student-athletes named ITA Scholar-Athletes. Eight student-athleteshave earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status during Bruce Berques tenure as U-M's head coach.
