
Edwards Honored as Big Ten Runner of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Fifth-year senior Nicole Edwards(Winnipeg, Manitoba/Vincent Massey) of the University of Michigan women's cross country team was named Big Ten Conference Runner of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 9) following her record-breaking performance at the Detroit Titan Invitational.
Edwards took the crown on the 5,000-meter course in a time of 17:19 last Saturday (Sept. 6) in Northville, Mich., besting both the course and meet records. The previous record of 17:28 was set in 1996 by Missy McCleary of Windsor. Michigan won the Titan Invitational team title with 27 points, as all five Wolverine scorers placed in the top 10.
This is the first career Big Ten weekly honor in cross country for Edwards, who is a two-time NCAA Great Lakes Regional champion (2006, '07). She was a first team All-Big Ten performer in 2007 after earning All-America honors and a spot on the All-Big Ten second team in 2006. Edwards received five Big Ten Athlete of the Week honors during her track career, with three as a senior in 2008 after one each in 2006 and 2007.
Edwards and the Wolverines will next compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 3, in South Bend, Ind. Action is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
