Postgame Notes: Notre Dame 35, Michigan 17

• The Wolverines committed six turnovers, including four lost fumbles, in the game, leading to 21 Irish points. The four fumbles are the most for the Wolverines since losing the ball four times against Memphis on Sept. 9, 1995. The six turnovers are the most since Nov. 14, 1992, in a 22-22 tie with Illinois.
• Freshman superback Sam McGuffie set career highs in every statistical category against the Irish. He gained 178 all-purpose yards, carrying the ball 25 times for 138 yards and grabbing four receptions for 47 yards. Today marked McGuffie's first 100-yard rushing game of his U-M career, and the first 100-yard rusher for Michigan this season.
• McGuffie had 100 yards of total offense in the first quarter, rushing nine times for 57 yards and collecting three receptions for 43 yards. He averaged 8.33 yards per play in the first quarter.
• McGuffie scored his first career receiving touchdown on a 40-yard screen pass from Steven Threet at 1:56 in the first quarter.
• McGuffie's 84 rushing yards on 15 carries in the first half were more than he gained in the first two games of the season combined (25 carries for 82 yards entering the game).
• With his 17-yard run on the team's second offensive play of the third quarter, McGuffie surpassed the 100-yard rushing barrier for the first time in his career.
• Redshirt freshman quarterback Steven Threet set career highs against the Irish, completing 16-of-23 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown. Threet completed 13-of-18 passes for 128 yards and one touchdown in the first half.
• True freshman wide receiver Martavious Odoms led U-M with six receptions for 56 yards. His six catches mark a career high, besting his five against Utah (Aug. 30).
• Junior wide receiver Greg Mathews returned to the lineup after missing the Miami (Ohio) game on Sept. 6. He had four catches for 46 yards.
• Sophomore wide receiver Zion Babb collected his first career receptions, catching two passes for 45 yards. His 45-yard reception from Nick Sheridan was a career long.
• Senior cornerback Morgan Trent recorded his first career multiple-interception game, grabbing two picks. Trent intercepted his first pass of the season with 14 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to set up kicker K.C. Lopata's field goal at 11:53 of the second stanza. His second interception on the day came at 2:08 in the fourth quarter, marking his team-leading sixth career pick. The last time a U-M defender recorded two interceptions was Prescott Burgess on Sept. 16, 2006, at Notre Dame.
• Trent led the defense with nine tackles in the game, two interceptions and one pass break up.
• Senior linebacker John Thompson posted seven tackles, forced a fumble and contributed to a tackle for loss.
• Junior superback Kevin Grady had his longest run of the season, scoring on an eight-yard TD run up the middle at 5:41 of the second quarter. The touchdown run was the first for Grady since reaching the end zone at Minnesota on Sept. 30, 2006. He missed the entire 2007 season after suffering a knee injury during spring drills.
• Senior/junior punter Zoltan Mesko converted a fake punt for a 13-yard carry on third-and-one at 6:53of the first quarter. The play was the first carry of Mesko's career.
• Mesko punted four times for 211 yards for a 52.8 average, including three over 50-yard boots (58, 51, 52).
• Michigan had 18 players that made their first career road trip.
• The U-M game captains for today's game at Notre Dame were senior safety Brandon Harrison, senior defensive tackle Terrance Taylor and senior linebacker John Thompson.
• Junior/sophomore left tackle Perry Dorrestein made his first career start in the Notre Dame game.
• Notre Dame scored the first points on a two-yard touchdown run by Hughes at 11:52 of the first quarter. It was first time that the Wolverines did not score the game's first points this season.
• U-M turned the ball over twice in the game's first four minutes, resulting in a 14-0 ND lead. The Irish led 21-0 before the Wolverines cracked the scoreboard on McGuffie's 40-yard TD reception.
• Head coach Rich Rodriguez dropped to 0-2 all-time against the Irish. Rodriguez's only previous matchup against the Irish was a 34-24 setback in his first season at West Virginia (2001).
