
Mahtani, Sugiyama Compete at ITA All-American Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. -- Senior Chisako Sugiyama (Parsippany, N.J./The Montclair Kimberley Academy) and junior Tania Mahtani (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula HS) of the University of Michigan women's tennis team competed in qualifying action at theRiviera/ITA All-American Championships on Tuesday (Sept. 30) at the Riviera Tennis Club. Sugiyama, who is competing in the prestigious national tournament for the second consecutive year, participated in singles qualifying and teamed with Mahtani in doubles qualifying.
Sugiyama and Mahtani, who are listed No. 22 in the preseason national rankings, picked up their first doubles win of the season with an 8-6 victory over Georgia's Cameron Ellis and Naoko Ueshima. It marked the 24th career win for the Michigan tandem.
Sugiyama was not able to carry the momentum over to singles play as she dropped a 6-4, 1-6, 3-6 decision to Auburn's Alex Haney. Sugiyama suffered a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 setback to UNC Greensboro's Alejandra Guerra in the opening round of the consolation draw.
Sugiyama and Mahtani will continue action in doubles qualifying on Wednesday (Oct. 1) when they take on UCLA's Ashley Joelson and Yasmin Schnack. The Wolverine pair needs two wins tomorrow to advance to the main draw.
