PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Sophomore Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team has been named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday (Jan. 19). This is Cameron's first career weekly accolade. He wins the award after winning the all-around competition as well as the pommel horse and still rings titles at the Windy City Invitational this past Saturday (Jan. 17).
A Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Cameron scored an 88.100 in his first career all-around appearance and set career highs on the pommel horse (15.100) and still rings (14.800) en route to the squad's second Windy City Invitational team championship in three years. In addition to the all-around event, Cameron made his collegiate debut on vault and high bar, posting marks of 14.750 and 13.850, respectively.
Last season as a rookie, Cameron received the Big Ten Sportsmanship award and was a Big Ten individual-event finalist on pommel horse, scoring 13.300 for ninth at the conference championships. He registered a career-best 14.900 on parallel bars during the NCAA team qualifiers to help boost U-M into the tournament's Super Six. Cameron was also named to the 2008 College Gymnastics Academic All-America second team.
Cameron is the first Wolverine to win Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors since junior David Chan(Singapore/Hale School, Perth, Western Australia) was awarded the conference accolade last season on March 4, 2008.
On Saturday (Jan. 24), the Wolverines will travel to State College, Pa., to take on Penn State in the season's first dual meet. The competition is slated to start at 7 p.m. at the White Building.
