
Switzer, McNamara Earn Provisional Times at Indiana Relays

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan men's track and field team completed day one of competition at the Indiana Relays late Friday night (Jan. 30) in the Harry Gladstein Fieldhouse. Senior Justin Switzer(Waterford, Mich./Kettering) and senior/junior Sean McNamara(Elmhurst, Ill./York) each recorded NCAA provisional times to lead a strong U-M showing in the mile invitational.
In the first final of the competition on the track, Michigan swept the top four spots in the one-mile run. The Wolverines were led by senior/junior Brandon Fellows(Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island), who crossed the line first with a personal-best time of 4:07.97. Fellows was followed by sophomore/freshman Craig Forys(Howell, N.J./Colts Neck), who finished second with a time of 4:09.69, junior/sophomore Peter Christmas(Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer), who finished third with a time of 4:10.77 and senior Lex Williams(Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter), who finished fourth with a time of 4:11.62.
Switzer and McNamara each earned their provisional times in the one-mile invitational. The two U-M runners finished second and third, respectively, with Switzer earning a new personal-best time of 4:01.76 and McNamara also claiming a personal-best time of 4:03.35.
The Wolverines earned their second win of the evening when the distance medley relay squad crossed the line in first in 10:12.16. The U-M squad of McNamara, senior Andre Barnes(West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield), Switzer and junior Ciaran O'Lionaird(Cork, Ireland/De La Salle) finished four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
In the field events, senior/junior John Kipf(Monroe, Mich./St. Mary Catholic Central) finished fourth in the high jump with a leap of 6-8.75 (2.05m), tying with six competitors for the top height, before earning fourth in the jump-off.
Michigan returns to action tomorrow morning (Saturday, Jan. 31) for the second day of the Indiana Relays. The action is set to resume at 9:30 a.m.
