
Michigan Sweeps Trio of Big Ten Foes in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team remained unbeaten in the Big Ten on Saturday, defeating No. 9 Ohio State, 180-151, No. 19 Penn State, 245-84, and Northwestern, 244-83, in the Big Ten Quad at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
In the 500-yard freestyle, junior Charlie Houchin(Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) led a 1-2 finish for the Wolverines as both he and sophomore Jared Miller(Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) met the NCAA consideration time. Houchin was first to the wall with a time of 4:20.44, a season best, and Miller became the sixth Wolverine to earn an NCAA 'B' time when he clocked in at 4:20.79, also a season best.
Sophomore Neal Kennedy(Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) became the fourth U-M swimmer this season to meet the NCAA consideration standard in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in first with a time of 1:47.69 and finishing just ahead of junior teammate Andr Schultz(Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Palmares), who placed second in 1:47.79.
In the 100-yard butterfly, junior Alon Mandel(Netanya, Israel/Eldad) earned second place with a season-best finish of 47.37. Mandel's NCAA consideration time was just 16 one-hundredths behind first-place Chuck Allison of Ohio State.
Junior Chris Brady(Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) led the field in the 100-yard backstroke, taking top honors with a time of 49.02. Brady was first to the wall at every turn, winning by a half-second over Ohio State's Andrew Elliott.
In the 100-yard freestyle, senior/junior Evan Ryser(Katy, Texas/James E. Taylor) used a blistering 11.44 final split for a come-from-behind victory. Ryser was in a tight battle early on with Ohio State's Duncan DeWet and Brian Alden of Penn State, but Ryser's strong finish earned him the win by ninth-tenths of a second.
Senior Kyle Schroeder(Milan, Mich./Milan) was the top-placing Wolverine in the diving well, posting a fourth-place score of 319.60 in the three-meter competition.
The Wolverines will return to the pool against in-state rival Michigan State next Sunday (Feb. 8) in East Lansing, Mich. The meet is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at MSU's McCaffree Pool and will be the final competition for U-M prior to the Big Ten Championships, held Feb. 26-28 in West Lafayette, Ind.
