PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Charlie Houchin (Raleigh, N.C./William G. Enloe) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named the Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday (Oct. 13). This is the first weekly award for Houchin in his career.
Houchin was part of three record-setting relay teams at the Dennis Stark Relays (Friday, Oct. 9), helping Michigan sweep all 10 events to start the season.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, he led off for the Wolverines with a split of 1:40.26 to give the Wolverines a six-second advantage. His opening split helped the Wolverines break the seven-minute barrier, the only team to accomplish the feat, and set a new meet record at 6:48.14. Houchin also anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay team, as the Wolverines set yet another meet record with a time of 1:22.49.
In the final meet of the evening, Houchin swam the third leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay, turning a two-second Wolverine advantage into a four-second lead as U-M touched the wall in 3:05.32 for its seventh meet record on the evening.
Houchin and the Wolverines return to the pool for their home opener, Friday, Oct. 23, against the University of Toronto. The teams will hit the water at 3 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
