Late Rally Not Enough in U-M Loss at No. 19 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan field hockey team lost to No. 19 Ohio State, 4-3, in a battle for second place in the Big Ten Conference on Saturday (Oct. 17) at North Turf Field. The Wolverines trailed 4-1 five minutes into the second half before rallying late.

Meredith Way
Junior Meredith Way (Newmanstown, Pa./Warwick) had a hand in all three U-M goals, scoring the first and second Michigan tallies to give herself a single-season high of 14 markers. Way later added an assist to give her 30 points this season, also a new career high.
The Buckeyes held a 3-1 lead at the halftime intermission. Two-thirds of the way through the first period, OSU scored at 22:30 and 25:51. Way then scored her first goal of the game at 27:54, but Ohio State answered back at 32:12.
OSU's tally at 39:27 proved to be the decisive goal despite Way scoring on a penalty stroke at 59:02 and freshman Adele Mills (North Vancouver, B.C./Little Flower Academy) cutting the deficit to one by flicking a shot past the OSU goalie with under seven minutes to go.
Michigan next travels to Oxford, Ohio, on Sunday (Oct. 18) to take on the Miami RedHawks at 1 p.m.
NOTES
• Meredith Way set a season high with five points today on two goals and one assist. She has points in eight straight games, posting 11 goals and two assists during the run.
• Way eclipsed her single-season career highs for goals and points. The junior now has 14 goals and two assists for 30 points. Last season, she had 12 goals and five assists for 29 points.
• Michigan is in a tie with Indiana for third place in the Big Ten standings. Both U-M and IU are 2-2. Michigan State leads the league at 3-0, while Ohio State is in second at 3-1.
