No. 18 Indiana Doubles Up Michigan in Regular-Season Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team lost its regular-season finale to No. 18 Indiana, 4-2, on Saturday (Oct. 31) at Phyllis Ocker Field. Michigan responded to each of IU's two first-half goals to make it 2-2 at the intermission, but the Hoosiers scored the only two goals of the second half in the 36th and 40th minutes to get the win.

U-M's top two scorers paced the offense as junior Meredith Way (Newmanstown, Pa./Lititz) assisted on Michigan's first goal and scored the second marker on a penalty stroke. Way finished the regular season with 17 goals and four assists for 38 points. Junior Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) scored her seventh goal of the season to give her a career-high 16 points.
IU's Brenna Moeljadi scored the game-winning goal off a penalty corner at 35:54, sending a shot low to the right side. The Hoosiers scored on a scrum in front of the cage at 39:39 for insurance.
Indiana and Michigan traded goals throughout the first half. Indiana opened the scoring at 12:11, before Mayer redirected a corner shot by Way at 17:23 to tie the game at 1-1. The Hoosiers then went ahead 2-1 at 23:41 following a loose ball in front of the U-M cage. Way converted on a penalty stroke at 33:18 by shooting halfway up the post on the left side to knot it at 2-2 heading into the half.
Up next for the Maize and Blue is the Big Ten Tournament, which is being hosted by Michigan State from Nov. 5-8. The Wolverines are the No. 5 seed and will oppose No. 4 seed Iowa on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 11 a.m. U-M lost 3-2 to Iowa in Ann Arbor on Sept. 25.
