OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- University of Michigan freshman second baseman Kelsey Kollen (Cerritos, Calif./Mater Dei HS) is among the 40 players invited by the Amateur Softball Association/USA Softball to participate in the selection camp for the 1999 USA Junior Girls National Team.
Kollen and the other selection camp participants will be vying for a spot on the 17-member USA team which will be defending its International Softball Federation Junior Girls World Championship title in Taipei this coming summer. The camp is scheduled for the first week of November in San Diego, Calif.
A prep standout at Mater Dei High School (Calif.) and a two-time ASA All-American, Kollen is slated to play at second base with Michigan when the 1999 collegiate season opens in mid-February. Kollen was the 1998 California Interscholastic Federation Division I Player of the Year after helping Mater Dei to its second state title in three seasons.
She is a two-time California All-State honoree (1997, '98) and was the CIF state Freshman and Sophomore of the Year award winner. Kollen played summer ball with Gordon's Panthers, leading the team to two ASA 18-Under Gold national titles (1996, '98).
Selection camp invitees were evaluated at events throughout the year, including the ASA Girls 18-Under Gold National Championship, the ASA Girls 18-Under A National Championship and the Colorado Firecracker Tournament. Players from 11 different states were named to the camp list, with California leading with 26 athletes chosen.
