PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Junior Jackie Carron (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and senior Alex Jendrusch (Troy, Mich./Athens) were among the honorees for the 2009 All-Big Ten Women's Soccer selections as announced by the conference office today (Wed., Nov. 11). Carron was tabbed a second team defender and Jendrusch was selected as U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship award recipient.
Carron earned her first All-Big Ten selection after leading the Wolverines to one of their best defensive seasons, statistically, and pacing the team in points during her junior campaign. One of four captains, Carron was the only Wolverine in the starting 11 for all 20 games this season. She led the team with six assists and 10 points, both career highs. Carron excelled in the classroom, as well, earning a ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 4 second team honors. A 2007 Big Ten All-Freshman team member, Carron is the first Wolverine to earn All-Big Ten honors since Lindsey Cottrell (2003, '05-07), Judy Coffman (2003-06) and Megan Tuura (2003-06) picked up second team nominations for the 2006 season.
Jendrusch capped her U-M career in fine style, becoming just the fifth senior to lead the team in scoring with four goals. Elected as a team captain, Jendrusch was one of six players to appear in all 20 games. She earned the first of 12 career starts against Marquette (Aug. 30) and scored her first career game-winning goal at Illinois (Nov. 1). In addition to her on-field exploits, Jendrusch is active in Student Athletes Leading Social Change (SALSC), a national group seeking to raise money to build a school in Kenya. She also serves as the Community Service Chair for Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).
The Big Ten Sportsmanship award is bestowed upon student-athletes that have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Jendrusch is now a candidate for the Big Ten Outstanding Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the school year.
