GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Junior midfielder Meredith Way (Newmanstown, Pa./Warwick) and redshirt junior midfielder Paige Laytos (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) of the University of Michigan field hockey team were chosen for the Longstreth/NFHCA All-West Region teams, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association announced on Thursday (Nov. 19). Way earned a first-team distinction, while Laytos was named to the second team. It's the first all-region honor for Way, while Laytos is now a three-time all-region recipient -- 2007 (first team), 2006 (second team).
Way was a 2009 All-Big Ten first team honoree and was picked for the 2009 All-Big Ten Tournament squad. The junior was first on the U-M roster in scoring with 19 goals and five assists for 43 points. Her 19 goals and 43 points were the most by a Wolverine since 2004 when Jessica Blake had 19 goals and 47 points. Way posted a career-best, nine-game point streak from Sept. 20-Oct. 18 (12-3-27). She had five two-goal efforts and tallied a season-high five points on two occasions -- two goals and an assist at Ohio State on Oct. 17, two goals and an assist against Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament first round on Nov. 5. Way heads into her senior season with 33 goals and 12 assists for 78 points in 63 career games.
Laytos was chosen for the 2009 All-Big Ten second team. She completed the season fourth on U-M's point chart with three goals and five assists for 11 points. Laytos had a season-high three points vs. Ball State on Sept. 13 with a goal and an assist. She returned to the U-M lineup after having to redshirt the 2008 season due to injury and has contributed 11 goals and 15 assists for 37 points in 67 career games.
With her first-team All-Region status, Way is a candidate for the Longstreth/NFHCA All-America team. The group will be announced on Monday, Nov. 23.
