EVANSTON, Ill. -- After the first day of competition at the TYR Invitational on Friday (Nov. 20), the No. 7-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming team sits in fifth place with 153 points in the three-day event held at the Norris Aquatics Center. Michigan State is in first place with 265 points after seven events.
Junior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick) led the way for the Wolverines with a runner-up showing in the 50-yard breaststroke (25.55) and a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.93).
The 400-yard medley relay quartet of freshman Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), Ridgeway, freshman Eric Huffman (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and freshman Sam Hoekstra (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) provided U-M with its other second-place finish of the evening, touching the wall in 3:23.78.
Meanwhile, Hoekstra also took fifth in the 50-yard freestyle, stopping the clock in 21.66, while fellow freshmen Ortiz (20.98) and Huffman (21.17) were 10th and 13th, respectively, to put points on the board for U-M.
Michigan started off the meet with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Hoekstra, Ortiz, freshman Kevin Wilson (Short Hills, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) and Huffman combining for a time of 1:23.22, less than a half-second behind second-place Northwestern.
The Wolverines will continue competition at the TYR Invitational tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 21), with preliminary action beginning at 10 a.m. CST. Finals are slated for 5 p.m. from the Norris Aquatics Center.

Michigan sent a group of 11 swimmers to the TYR Invitational, while two divers were at the Purdue Invitational this weekend.
The TYR field competed in the 50-yard breaststroke, an event that is not an official NCAA event.
