PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan women's basketball freshman guard Dayeesha Hollins (Cincinnati, Ohio/Winton Woods) became the first player in Big Ten women's basketball history to be named Big Ten Player of the Week and Big Ten Freshman of the Week after earning both honors on Monday (Dec. 21). Hollins led the Wolverines to wins over eighth-ranked Xavier and in-state foe Detroit last week. It is her first career Player and Freshman of the Week honors and she is the first Wolverine to be named Big Ten Player of the Week since Dec. 16, 2008, when former Wolverine Stephany Skrba (2006-09) earned the honor.
Hollins had a career night against Xavier in front of her hometown fans. The Cincinnati native posted a career-best 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds to go with three assists and four steals. She also scored the game-winning layup with 17 seconds left to give U-M the 72-71 win over the Musketeers. Against Detroit, she posted her third consecutive double-figure performance with 17 points and seven assists in leading Michigan to a 65-51 win; the fifth consecutive road win for the Wolverines. Hollins averaged 19.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists for the week and is currently leading U-M in several categories, including points (13.8) and assists (4.1).
The Wolverines will take some time off for the holiday before returning to the hardwood on Monday, Dec. 28, when they host Northwestern in their Big Ten home opener. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. in Crisler Arena.
